• Getting to Alor is part of the adventure - and we promise it’s worth it.

If you're coming from overseas, we suggest entering Indonesia through either Jakarta or Bali. From these locations, you can take a flight to Kupang. Following that, there’s one more flight to Alor Mali Airport.

    • Traveling via Bali: You will need to spend a night in Kupang; we can provide some hotel recommendations to make your stay comfortable.

    • Flying from Jakarta: You have the option to take an overnight flight to Kupang, allowing you to arrive just in time for the morning flight to Alor.

Please keep in mind that domestic flight schedules can frequently change with little notice. Therefore, we strongly advise allowing yourself plenty of travel days to accommodate any potential delays.

    What Should I Pack?

Daytime temperatures tend to be warm, so wearing comfortable clothing is advisable. However, during the evenings from May to September, it can become somewhat cooler. A light cover-up may come in handy, especially when stargazing from our rooftop or relaxing by the fire pit.

We have implemented measures to plant a variety of mosquito-repelling plants throughout the dive centre; however, we still recommend that you bring some mosquito repellent for added protection.

Our accommodation provides eco-friendly, shower amenities, but feel free to bring your own if you have specific preferences. Please ensure your sunscreen is reef-safe to help protect the beautiful reefs.

If you’re in the mood for adventure and wish to explore Alor’s waterfalls or take a stroll through the hills, we suggest packing comfortable shoes or sandals.

  • When is the best time to dive in Alor?
Our diving season runs from around mid March to mid December. Outside of this period, we close during the off-season due to more unpredictable weather and sea conditions. This allows us to ensure that every guest who visits during the season has the best possible experience, with safe diving, reliable access to sites and comfortable conditions.
The seasonal closure also helps to give the reefs time to rest and cover, and allows us to carry out proper maintenance and preparation for the following season.

  • How do you decide where to dive each day?
We plan our dives day-by-day based on tides, currents, weather and the experience level of our guests.
Alor is a dynamic destination, so rather than following a fixed schedule, we choose sites that will give the best and safest conditions on that particular day.

What are the currents in Alor typically like?
Alor is known for its currents - that’s one of the reasons why the marine life here is so rich. Currents can range from gentle drifts to stronger flows depending on location, tide, and time of day. Some dives are calm and slow, others are classic drift dives.
We plan conservatively, brief thoroughly, and choose sites that suit the experience level of the group.

How many dives per day do you offer?
We offer a maximum of three dives per day depending on your chosen package.

    What are your diver-to-guide ratios?
We keep our groups small and personal.
Our usual ratio is a maximum of 4 divers per guide. Small groups allow for better briefings, more relaxed dives. It also means that we can stay fully focused on safety, conditions and helping you get the most out of each dive.

  • Is Alor better for macro or big marine life?
Alor is exceptional for macro life, healthy reefs, interesting topography and biodiversity. Critters, vibrant coral, and unique species are seen on almost every dive. Bigger marine life is present too, but it’s not a guaranteed “big pelagic on every dive” destination.

    Are sightings seasonal?
Alor offers excellent diving throughout the season, and we generally don’t recommend planning a trip around the hope of seeing one specific species. Marine life here can be influenced by currents, tides, and daily conditions rather than a fixed “seasonal calendar”. Reef-life, biodiversity and coral health are consistently strong, and every week can bring different surprises.
Rather than promising particular sightings at particular times, we focus on choosing the best sites each day to make the most of the conditions we have - which is what keeps diving in Alor exciting and unpredictable in the best way.

Are night dives available and are they worth it?
Yes - and they’re absolutely worth it.
Night dives in Alor can be incredibly rewarding, with a completely different cast of characters coming out after dark. They tend to be slower-paced, calm dives that are great for photography and observation. Night dives are offered when conditions and guest experience levels allow.

    What is the water temperature?
The temperature usually fluctuates between 24-29º, but there can be thermoclines at some sites that drop to a chilly 16º. If you tend to feel the cold, we suggest bringing a 5mm wetsuit along with layers, such as a hood.

  • Is Dive In Alor suitable for underwater photographers?
We’re photographer friendly in the ways that matter; small groups, patient guiding, flexible dive profiles and an understanding that sometimes you want to spend ten minutes with one subject, when safety allows.

Do you have dedicated camera rinse tanks and charging areas?
We have large rinse tanks on site, and we generally separate camera equipment from other dive  gear to avoid accidental knocks and salt buildup.

On the boat we also carry a large water-filled box specifically for cameras, so they can stay cool and protected between dives.

In each room you’ll find a small desk with plenty of charging points, making it easy to recharge camera, lights and batteries overnight in your own space.

  • What tanks and valves do you use (DIN/INT)?
Our aluminium tanks are fitted with convertible valves, meaning they can be used with both DIN and INT (yoke) regulators.

Let us know your set up in advance and we’ll be sure to have everything ready for you.

    Is Nitrox available?
At the moment Nitrox is not available.
All dives are conducted on air, with conservative planning and appropriate surface intervals built into the day.

Do you support sidemount or technical configurations?
We’re primarily set up for recreational diving, but we’re familiar with a range of configurations.

If you dive sidemount or have a non-standard setup, please get in touch before booking so we can discuss what’s possible. We’re always happy to talk things through and see how best to support your diving style within our operational and safety framework.

  • How far are the dive sites?
Most dive-sites are within 15-50 minutes by boat, depending on location and conditions.

What safety equipment do you carry on the boat?
Safety is taken very seriously. Our boat is equipped with oxygen, first aid kits, surface marker buoys and safety gear appropriate for the area and conditions. Dive briefings always include site-specific safety information, and we manage currents and changing conditions calmly and conservatively.

Where is the nearest hyperbaric chamber?
The nearest chamber is located in Bali, which is why dive insurance is mandatory for all guests. We take a strong prevention-first approach through conservative dive planning and careful guiding.

We can help guests arrange short term or daily dive insurance through DAN on arrival if needed.

  • What does a typical day look like?
Days here are relaxed and shaped around the ocean.
Depending on your chosen package, most days include two or three boat dives, with two of those usually scheduled in the morning when conditions allow. Lunch and downtime follow, with space to rest, review photos or simply enjoy relaxing.

What is the atmosphere like - social or quiet?
We strive to keep our atmosphere generally calm, friendly and low-key. Guests can enjoy sharing stories over meals or between dives, but there’s no pressure to be social if you’d rather unwind quietly. With only a small number of guests at a time, we hope it will feel more like staying with friends than at a busy resort.

What should we expect in terms on Wi-Fi and connectivity?
Wi-Fi is available and generally offers good coverage throughout the property. That said, Alor is a remote location and occasional slowdowns or interruptions can happen. If  you’re very dependant on reliable connectivity for work or uploads we recommend arranging an eSIM or local data backup for peace of mind.

  • Dive In Alor is designed for divers who value quality over quantity and enjoy places that feel calm, personal and a little off the beaten path.

You’ll likely love it here if you:

    • Prefer small groups and calm, considered style of diving.

    • Appreciate flexibility and adapting plans to conditions.

    • Enjoy remote locations and simple comforts done well.

    • Are happy letting the ocean, not the schedule lead the day.

It may not be the right fit if you:

    • Are looking for a large resort or busy social scene.

    • Expect fixed dive scheduled regardless of conditions.

    • Want guaranteed “bucket list” sightings on every dive.

    • Prefer constant connectivity and lots of nightlife.

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to talk things through honestly - we’d much rather help you decide if we’re a good fit than try to be everything to everyone.
