Alor’s Location
Alor is located in the eastern part of Indonesia, neighbouring Flores to the west and lying to the north of Timor Leste. It shares its waters with Timor Leste and the Southwest Maluku regency.
Temperatures & Currents
Water temperatures can fluctuate from 27 degrees Celsius to cooler thermoclines of 16 degrees. These cooler temperatures, combined with the currents that flow through the area, play a significant role in maintaining the remarkable health of the reefs. They bring essential nutrients up from the depths. The presence of stronger currents can make some of these dive sites quite challenging, however we always select dive sites with safety and comfort as our top priority.
The Topography
With stunning walls, enchanting caves, sloping reefs, and dark sandy bays, it’s easy to see why Alor is regarded as one of Indonesia's premier diving spots. There is truly a dive experience suited for everyone.
The Seasons
The diving season runs from March until December. During these months conditions are at their best with spectacular visibility and inviting waters. The sea comes alive with an array of marine life, making each dive an unforgettable experience. Whether you are drifting along the colourful coral walls, exploring the intriguing topography or losing yourself amongst the critters of Kalabahi Bay, we truly believe there is something for everyone here.
Muck Diving
Kalabahi Bay, sheltered from stronger currents, is a haven for a remarkable array of marine critters including stunning Nudibranchs, Seahorses, Cephalopods, and even the elusive Rhinopias. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your camera battery fully charged!
The Reef
The Alor reefs boast pristine corals and vibrant schools of fish, alongside fascinating macro-life including Frogfish, Pygmy Seahorses, and more. While sightings cannot be guaranteed, the exceptional water conditions provide a good opportunity to encounter thrilling pelagic life, such as Hammerhead Sharks and various reef Sharks and Rays. Our dive site commutes are frequently accompanied by large pods of Dolphins, and you might even be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a passing Whale!
